Okay first off, how handsome do these guys look? And because I know people will ask…no I’m not dating either of them! Haha. But, they are both single 😉 Hopefully you’ve been following our new series: Financially FIIT, Physically FIIT, and now Fashionably FIIT.
Since we are stepping into the fall and winter seasons today’s post is all about how to layer your wardrobe. I haven’t had a ton of experience with mens fashion, but I have picked up a few things from my dad. My sense of style actually comes from him.
I’ve always been a fan of Mizzen + Main and Ben has converted Spencer into a super fan too. They honestly have the best mens dress shirts of all time. No need to worry about their shirts wrinkling ever… Especially if layering it with a sweater or pullover. Okay so let’s talk about 3 tips to show you how to layer menswear this fall!
3 TIPS FOR LAYERING MENSWEAR
WHEN TO TUCK IN YOUR SHIRT HEM
The rule of thumb is always tuck in your shirt if you’re wearing a sweater over it. However, I think it depends on the sweater and look each guy is going for these days. Ben is wearing his shirt untucked with his sweater which I personally love if a guy is going on a date or somewhere a bit more casual. It’s stylish, not sloppy looking.
Even though Spencer’s outfit seems more casual he is wearing his shirt tucked in under the sweater. I like it tucked in here because he is wearing all the same color and his look is a bit more edgy. Also, you can see more of his shirt around the neckline so it doesn’t need to be visible in both places.
ALWAYS ROLL YOUR SLEEVES
I feel like this might be obvious, but you should always cuff your dress shirt sleeves over a sweater. It can’t be comfortable to have a bunch of fabric stuffed under your sweater sleeve. If you notice, Ben only rolled his sleeves once for a more polished and professional look. He is a financial advisor so sophisticated is his game.
Spencer works in real estate and for himself so he can get away with a more casual look most of the time. Also, his pullover is more casual than Ben’s sweater so rolling up the sleeves a few times is totally fine.
The other reason you always want to roll your sleeves is to show the watch you’re wearing. Who wants to be pulling back their sleeve each time they need to check the time or if you wear an Apple Watch you’re probably checking it way more often. When you’re sleeves are rolled up it’s much more discreet when looking at your watch.
COLLAR GAME
I personally didn’t know the exact rules about this one… I’ll give Ben all the credit here. His rule of thumb is to keep the collar tucked into the sweater if it’s a crew neck or if he was wearing this to work. Makes sense to me! It does look more professional, but I don’t think an untucked collar would be a style faux pas. I think if you had a coat on with the layers then yes keep the collar tucked into the sweater. However, he did say he would wear the collar out over the sweater if it was on the weekend or for a night out.
With the pullover Spencer is wearing it’s a easy call here on what to do with the collar. Any zip up or v-neck type of sweater/pullover will always have the collar kept inside the neckline. If it has a zipper like this pullover Spencer is wearing always keep the zipper all the way unzipped and keep the first button or two undone. I’d do two buttons with a zip up pullover and one button with a v-neck sweater.
My face trying to get two men to cooperate… Ben and Spencer… “Dude, we nailed it.”
